Milan’s midfield impressing early

It might be a surprise to learn that Milan’s midfield three of Tijjani Reijnders, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Yunus Musah have never played together before.

But early signs are promising, they’ve had some neat and tidy touches so far.

Reijnders skipped past a couple of tackles in the build-up to that Loftus-Cheek chance, and though the former Chelsea star skied his effort, that kind of late run offers encouragement.

Chances at either end

It’s Loftus-Cheek crossing for Leao this time, but Hakimi makes a crucial intervention to prevent Leao from finishing from point-blank range.

Moments later at the other end, Mbappe forces the first save of the night from Maignan.

This is shaping up to be a pretty open match!

Big chance for Loftus-Cheek!

6′ AC Milan 0-0 Paris Saint-Germain

Leao ghosts past a defender on the left wing and crosses into the centre of the box.

Loftus-Cheek arrives late and has a free shot on goal, but fires his effort just over the crossbar.

A big let-off for PSG, though Milan are still without a goal in the Champions League this season.

It was expected but tonight is already shaping up to be a brutal one for Gianluigi Donnarumma.

It’s the first time he has played in the San Siro against his former club AC Milan. The 24-year-old made more than 250 appearances for the club but he walked away two years ago, joining PSG on a free transfer after refusing to sign a new contract.

Let’s just say that his former club have not forgotten about that. The Milan ultras have stockpiled fake bank notes to bring to the ground tonight, with Donnarumma’s face printed onto them. He has already been ferociously heckled during the warm-ups. He is the pantomime villain, and will need to rise above it all as PSG seek to progress.

The curious twist in the tale of course is that his his replacement in Milan, Mike Maignan, began his career in the PSG academy. He has been excellent, and is now France’s No 1 goalkeeper. He would have been a good fit in this new-look, France-focused PSG era…

Elsewhere in the Champions League, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland has recovered from a knock to start against Young Boys. City need a point to progress to the knockouts.

Also kicking off shortly:

Lazio vs Feyenoord

Red Star Belgrade vs RB Leipzig

Four players enter this match a yellow card away from a one-game suspension, two from each side:

Yunus Musah and Rade Krunic for AC Milan, and Ousmane Dembele and Achraf Hakimi for Paris Saint-Germain.

Krunic is on the bench while the other three players start.

Pioli is probably saying ‘no soft yellows first five, lads…’

The superb Mike Maignan, now France’s No 1, spent six years at PSG. Three in the academy, three playing for their reserve team.

But he never stepped up to the first team or made a senior appearance. That could sting.

He’ll probably want to show them what they’re missing tonight.

And against an attack containing international team-mates Kylian Mbappe, Randal Kolo Muani and Ousmane Dembele, he’ll have to be on song to keep a clean sheet.

As Mike says, my Italian isn’t brilliant but you can get the gist of this message.

Got to hope he doesn’t mis-kick one in the first five minutes

Borussia Dortmund 2-0 Newcastle United

Borussia Dortmund 2-0 Newcastle United

Goals from Niclas Füllkrug and Julian Brandt either side of half-time have given Dortmund a 2-0 home win over Newcastle.

The result lifts the German side into first place in Group F, though a tie for Paris Saint-Germain against AC Milan tonight would restore the French side to the top.

Elsewhere in the Champions League, Shakhtar Donetsk have taken a shock 1-0 victory over Barcelona in Germany.

Luis Enrique: We always have the will to fight

Luis Enrique: We always have the will to fight

Speaking before the match, PSG boss Luis Enrique said: “I want to be optimistic, as I am before every game. We’re going to face a tough opponent in an historic stadium.

“I can see that the players are really looking forward to this game. We know what we want to do, even if it will be difficult against such tough opponents, who need points in this group, just like every other team.

“I’m always happy with my team’s attitude. Of course there are things to improve, but from day one I’ve always seen a team with a good attitude. We’ve improved since then. We always have the will to fight and that’s a characteristic of this group.

“As a coach, I’m very pleased with what I see. Both in terms of attitude and performance. We want to control the game as much as possible. I’m very satisfied, but I’m always looking for the team to improve.”

Either way, he looks determined tonight.

Of course, as a former Inter player, he knows all about playing at the San Siro.

Kylian Mbappe’s drilled, near-post finish is bamboozling opponents

There are countless parallels between Kylian Mbappe and Thierry Henry. Henry was, and Mbappe is, a right-footer who played off the left, though they share an interpretation of the role as more inside-forward than winger.

Henry’s trademark became the far-post finish, often curled into the bottom-right corner. Mbappe scores those — in fact, he can score every type of goal — but is increasingly getting goals in a way Henry did not.

He is still cutting in from the left but reversing the shot, using the laces or instep to drill a near-post finish, catching the goalkeeper and defender(s) unaware.

His opening goal in Paris Saint-Germain’s recent 3-0 Champions League win over AC Milan is a perfect example. Dive deeper below!

Brandt doubles Dortmund’s lead vs Newcastle

Brandt doubles Dortmund’s lead vs Newcastle

Julian Brandt has coolly finished off a two-on-one breakaway for Borussia Dortmund, doubling their lead over Newcastle United with just over 10 minutes left in normal time.

Unless Newcastle mount a late comeback, Dortmund are heading to the top of Group F ahead of today’s second match between AC Milan and PSG.
