CelticArne Engels Celtic value soars in double-quick time as record signing has bumper price set

Published

on

Arne Engels arrived at Celtic from Augsburg in a blaze of publicity this summer after Brendan Rodgers made him the club’s record-ever signing.

The young Belgian was signed by Celtic for a club-record fee of £11.5m from Bundesliga side Augsburg, smashing the previous record set when Odsonne Edouard was purchased from PSG in 2018.

Since his arrival, Engels has made 14 appearances in the green and white Hoops scoring three goals and creating six with three of those assists coming in the Champions League.

The 21-year-old also scored his first Champions League goal for Celtic against Slovan Bratislava and since then, Engels has been developing nicely under Brendan Rodgers.

And now, a recent study by CIES Football Observatory has placed Engels’ value at almost double what it was when Celtic first signed him.

Arne Engels valued sky rockets after flying start to Celtic season

Engels has slotted well into Rodgers’ Celtic and after a couple of games where he seemed to lose his way, the Belgian has still produced the good.

So much so that CIES now has Engels valued between £14.1m and £19.9m using their ‘Fair Price’ tool. The value is worked out from the price that was paid for the player and taking into account inflation and who could potentially afford to but the player.

With Engels being in the high-tier pricing range (in relative terms) the Belgian is likely to attract attention from Europe’s top teams considering he is a full Belgium international.

Engels’ age and how much he still has to develop means that even at the high-end valuation, the Celtic midfielder would represent a bargain for any of Europe’s top teams should any want to secure his services in the future.

Report as Chelsea beat Celtic 2-1 in the Women’s Champions League; the Blues had to come from a goal down after Murphy Agnew’s opener; However, goals from Maika Hamano and Ashley Lawrence secured a ninth straight Chelsea win this season; they are now three wins from three in the WCL

Wednesday 13 November 2024 23:37, UK

Chelsea were forced to come from a goal down as they secured a 2-1 victory at Celtic to maintain their perfect start in the Women’s Champions League.

Sonia Bompastor’s side, who travelled to Scotland without Millie Bright, Kadeisha Buchanan, Sjoeke Nusken and Mayra Ramirez, were made to work hard for their win, which sees them maintain their perfect start to the season with a ninth straight victory in all competitions this term.

In Celtic’s first real attack of the game, Murphy Agnew finished off a swift counter from the hosts as they took a shock 22nd-minute lead.

However, Chelsea, who are on a 12-match winning run in all competitions, were not behind for long.

The WSL champions – who face a crucial WSL clash against leaders Man City, live on Sky Sports on Saturday (Kick-off 5.30pm) – roared back with two goals in four first-half minutes.

Maika Hamano swept home Aggie Beever-Jones’ cut back for the equaliser (28), before Ashley Lawrence thumped home a rebound after goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty denied stand-in Chelsea captain Erin Cuthbert from close range.

A much-changed Chelsea pushed to extend their advantage in the second half but found Celtic goalkeeper Daugherty in fine form. She twice denied substitute Catarina Macario before Johanna Rytting Kaneryd’s low shot was kept out as Daugherty held Chelsea at bay.

The third goal never came for the Blues, who had Beever-Jones sent off in stoppage-time after two bookable offences, but they held on for a third straight win in the Women’s Champions League to sit top of Group B with nine points.

Meanwhile, it was a spirited showing from Celtic but the remain rooted to the bottom of the group as they await their first point in the competition.

Group B standings…

Chelsea, who have nine points, are three points clear in the pool of second-placed Real Madrid, while Elena Sadiku’s Celtic stay bottom, yet to get a point on the board, three behind Twente.

Bompastor not happy with performance

Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor:

“I knew it would be a tough game for us, especially because of the Celtic mentality. They showed a lot of heart and they played with a lot of energy. We were expecting that they were going to be really motivated.

“Also, as a manager, I decided to rotate my squad, so sometimes it can happen that the players don’t get the same chemistry together. But I wanted to have a better impression from my team. I’m really happy with the three points and the victory, but not really happy with the performance. We were not efficient enough tonight.

“Every game is always an opportunity to learn. Tonight I learned a lot and I will share that with my players as a team, but also as individuals.

“There are some positives. With our squad, we are still able to rotate players and rest some. We have the three points and the victory, so we stay in the good dynamic for that, but in terms of the performance, we needed to do a better job in different aspects.

“As a manager, I always have different plans for the game and the three substitutions were planned. That’s the positive. We are just now moving on and going into the Manchester City game exactly with the plans we wanted to have.”

‘We didn’t panic’

Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor on her side coming from behind to win a game for the first time during her tenure:

“It’s a positive thing. We didn’t really get stressed about the situation. We were confident enough to stay in the game, play and score the two goals.

“I think we could have scored a lot more. We were not efficient tonight, but at least we didn’t concede more than one.”

‘Performance can give Celtic confidence’

Celtic head coach Elena Sadik:

“Obviously I’m gutted because I think we deserved more. I think we were the team that looked closest to scoring a goal in the last minutes, not Chelsea. But I am very proud of the girls. What a performance, what an effort. They followed through with the game plan exactly as I wanted to do.

“It’s not only that, I talked about being confident and brave before the game. If you look at that game, you can see players with a lot of confidence. I’m very pleased and I’m very proud.

“We’ve been growing into the competition. Tonight we showed everything that we can do. The confidence that we get from this performance can only make us stronger. The girls know who we can compete against. Hopefully the first points will come.

“I think that they probably believe it more now because what we showed tonight is a really good effort and really good performance. Now the girls know what they can do.”

“hat we did tonight is going to give us even more hunger to play against Rangers on Sunday. We showed again what quality players we have. I’m really looking forward to the game on Sunday because with this performance hopefully we can be more brave and more confident.Celtic boss Elena Sadiku on facing Rangers on Sunday

A special Women’s Champions League match between Celtic and Chelsea. Elena Sadiku is the youngest manager to take a team to the group stage. She faces the first head coach to win the Champions League as a player and a manager. Sonia Bompastor rested some of her team, meaning there was an opportunity for the younger players. Maelys Mpome and Oriane Jean-Francois profited from that decision. It also showed how confident Bompastor is in her squad. Find out everything on the match between Celtic vs Chelsea.

Chelsea control the match

The opening of the first half is dominated by Chelsea, with most of the action on the left wing. The Blues are pressing the Celtic box, with some first attempts from Wieke Kaptein and Jean-Francois. Sandy Baltimore is important here with the deliveries and linking up with Beever-Jones and Kaptein in the box.

Chelsea earned two early corners but were not able to score from the set pieces. The first was taken short by Hamano to Baltimore. A combination we will see more often in the match. She sent the cross away to the far post, but it was headed away. The second corner was also short, but Baltimore had to lay it back to Hamano. Her delivery was also headed away.

Celtic takes the lead

After The Blues controlled the match throughout the first 20 minutes it was Celtic that took the lead, while no one expected them to. Their opportunities mostly coming from the transitions; This time it was Agnew running through the backline. A smart pass from McGregor found her. Agnew advanced on Mušović, putting it in the back of the net. A wake-up call for Chelsea. The Blues were a little too comfortable with their defence, giving the home team the perfect opportunity.

Aggie Beever-Jones and Hamano link up for the equalizer

It did not take Chelsea long to level with Celtic. Ashley Lawrence sent Aggie Beever Jones away who got passed Bruna Lourenço and delivered to Hamano, who put it passed Daugherty.

Moments later Agnew broke through the Chelsea defense again but was charged by Mušović. The goalkeeper missed it but her defenders cleared the ball. It immediately led to the counter by Chelsea. The Blues set up the attack via Baltimore and Aggie Beever-Jones. The ball was delivered in the box and Erin Cuthbert’s shot was blocked brilliantly by Daugherty. Unfortunately, the goalkeeper is met by the effort from Ashley Lawrence and this time she could not make the save. Chelsea takes the lead.

The first half ends with a couple more opportunities for Chelsea. The Blues do not extend the lead before half-time and Celtic run through the Chelsea backline one more time. Ashworth-Clifford gets to the ball first, but Perisset is right behind her, forcing the Celtic player to shoot early. Ashworth-Clifford effort was right at Mušović, who makes the stop.

After the break Bompastor made some changes: Baltimore, Lawrence and Cuthbert made way for Bronze, Rytting Kaneryd and Reiten. It seemed that the head coach was not to sure on her Starting IX being able to do the job. Celtic proved to be a tough opponent that capitalised on every small mistake in the back.

The second half continued like the first half ended: Chelsea on top. Kelly Clark kept her team in the game when clearing an effort off the line. Björn tried for long distance, but her effort was blocked and Guro Reiten’s shot went wide.

Substitutions for both coaches

Chelsea reinforced their team with fresh legs in the attack: Catarina Macario on for Maika Hamano. Elena Sadiku also made a change around the one hour mark: Bruna Costa came off for Hayes.

With thirty more minutes on the clock the hosts are still in the game. Taking a point against Chelsea would be a huge achievement for them. Celtic surprised Chelsea with quick thinking from Ashworth-Clifford. Her pass to Smith was just too far ahead and Perisset was there to block any effort.

Excellent defending from the hosts

Catarina Macario tested her fire power three times in a short amount of time. Two of her efforts saved by Daugherty and the third went wide. The striker recovered from an ACL injury last season and has been back with the squad since.

Elena Sadiku made a triple changes: Agnew, Ross & Gallacher replaced by Cavanagh, Noonan & Cross Noonan.

Chelsea got really close to the 1-3 when Nathalie Björn received the ball from in the box. Her shot went over the cross bar. Celtic reminded Chelsea not to get too comfortable. Ashworth-Clifford got away from Mpome, her effort was saved by Mušović and cleared by the defence.

Daugherty keeping Celtic alive

Aggie Beever-Jones laid the ball back to Jean-Francois just outside the box. She fired away her shot but Daugherty saw right through it, diving to the bottom right corner to make the save. Next Beever-Jones tried for goal herself. Again Daugherty had to make an important save. The Chelsea pressure in the box was very high, a great moment for Celtic to profit from the space in the back. The high press from the hosts brings a lot of trouble to the Chelsea backline, keeping the fans on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.

A messy four minutes of added time

In the last ten minutes of the game four yellow cards are awarded. The game gets messier with more fouls and frustration. Celtic want to score the equaliser, while Chelsea is slowing down the play when they can. The match ends with a red card (double yellow) for Aggie Beever-Jones. Her first yellow was for coming back on the pitch too early after receiving treatment. Her second for a late tackle.

Nevertheless: Chelsea secures the win and takes home three points.

Ross McCormack admits Rangers are ‘petrified’ of one Celtic hero but it’s not Daizen Maeda

Daizen Maeda has done a lot of damage to Rangers since he joined the club back in December 2021.

The Japanese winger is devastating when he is on form and his pace absolutely destroys opposition defences.

Maeda’s work rate also makes him a fan favourite and it’s little wonder the Celtic supporters love the Japan international.

However, looking forward to the upcoming League Cup final between Celtic and Rangers, former Ibrox player Ross McCormack says his old team are terrified of one player and, surprisingly, it’s not Maeda.

Rangers defenders are ‘terrified’ of Celtic hero Kyogo Furuhashi

McCormack told Hotline Live [9m 30s], “I don’t think when Rangers go to Celtic Park, there’s enough of a fear factor for Celtic going up against Dessers.

“And I flip that the other way and see every time Rangers go and play Celtic, the Rangers’ defence looks petrified at what Kyogo might do to them.

“And that’s the impact that Kyogo’s had on all the goals he’s scored against Rangers in the derby games. So Dessers, as I say, he’s good to a point. He does a job to a point.

“Is he what Rangers really need to go to the next level and be winning trophies and winning titles? I don’t think so.”

Kyogo Furuhashi’s Celtic record vs Rangers including League Cup final battering

Kyogo has faced Rangers 15 times during his time with Celtic. In those games, the Japanese has been on the winning side on nine occasions, drawing three and losing three.

The Celtic striker has scored eight goals across three domestic competitions as he keeps the Ibrox club in their place.

Here are all the games Kyogo has found the back of the net against Rangers:

Scottish Premiership

1.1.2023: Rangers 2 v 2 Celtic. Kyogo scored a late equaliser.

8.4.2023: Celtic 3 v 2 Rangers. A Kyogo double effectively seals the title.

3.9.2023: Rangers 0 v 1 Celtic: Kyogo scores the only goal of the game to clinch Ibrox win.

30.12.2023: Celtic 2 v 1 Rangers: New Year derby settled by another Kyogo goal.

01.09.2024: Celtic 3 v 0 Rangers: Kyogo scores a stunner in drubbing of Rangers at Celtic Park.

Scottish League Cup

26.02.2023: Rangers 1 v 2 Rangers. Kyogo does this:

And defeated Rangers with another double that helped Celtic on their way to a treble that season.

McCormack is right, Rangers are, and should be, petrified of the Celtic talisman.
