Chelsea take on Liverpool this afternoon

Chelsea take on Liverpool this afternoon at Anfield in what is Enzo Maresca’s toughest away match yet as Blues head coach. Going into the weekend, the Reds topped the Premier League table but Chelsea have started the season brilliantly too.

After seeing 10-man Arsenal lose at Bournemouth yesterday evening, both Liverpool and Chelsea will be hoping to take advantage of the Gunners’ slip up. Going into the game, Maresca has a fully fit squad to choose from but will be without defenders Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella, who both picked up their fifth yellow cards of the season before the international break.

Reece James could return to the squad following his lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a hamstring problem. The Chelsea captain is not expected to start today but with the suspensions, there could be a space in the squad for the right-back.

Kick-off at Anfield is scheduled for 4:30pm (UK time) in what is a wet and stormy day throughout the country. You can follow live coverage of the game right here with Bobby Vincent, who is on

Can Palmer match Salah?

Enzo Maresca was not having any of it when asked to compare the ability of Cole Palmer to Mohamed Salah ahead of today’s match.

The only thing I can say is that you cannot judge just one year or two years. In Salah’s case you have to judge him over the last seven or eight years with Liverpool.

For me he has been one of the best Liverpool players in the last five, six, seven years. Cole is doing that for us last year and now, and hopefully it can continue for the next five or 10 years with us.

Shearer has Chelsea faith

Alan Shearer believes Chelsea will take a point from Anfield this afternoon. Liverpool are the big favourites to win against the Blues but Shearer, speaking to Betfair, thinks Enzo Maresca’s side could surprise a few today…

Chelsea will be happy to walk away from Anfield with a point, despite the injury to Alisson. I know they dropped points in their last home game vs Forest, but I would imagine Enzo Maresca would snap your hands off for a point here.

The key battle will be in midfield, where I think Liverpool have been strong. Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister have been superb, alongside Dominik Szoboszlai.

The international break always makes it a little bit tougher to call, as you wait to see how players are when the return to their clubs, whether they’re ready or not to start the game. If everyone is fit and everyone plays, that midfield battle will be key, and I think Liverpool will come out on top.

Some stats

Here are some stats ahead of today’s match between Liverpool and Chelsea…
