Eddie Howe comment speaks volumes after Liverpool transfer interest in Anthony Gordon

Anthony Gordon is a player that Liverpool admires. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has admitted players could still leave the Magpies before the August 30

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has refused to rule out a late exit for one of his key attacking players, including Anthony Gordon, before the end of the transfer window. Liverpool is an admirer of the England forward.

Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes have also been linked with big-money exits from St James’ Park and Howe could not issue a guarantee to Newcastle fans that they will all still be there when the August 30 transfer deadline arrives. Liverpool is yet to make a signing this summer but did agree a deal in principle that would have seen Gordon and Joe Gomez swap places.

“I have been in the game too long to make those statements,” Howe said before facing his old side Bournemouth later today (as quoted by the

“What I will say is, from my part and the club’s part, we will do everything we can to keep our best players, but I am not a fortune teller. As managers, we learn to live with it in this world because we have to. But it’s not ideal, there is a lot going on.”

Gordon has been training well with Newcastle and has shown no signs of forcing through an exit. But he only has two years left on his contract meaning that Liverpool could bring him to Anfield in the future as long as he doesn’t sign a new deal.

“You can’t change the player being affected by what they read and what he takes in,” Howe continued. “And suddenly a whole thought process goes away from what he needs to focus on which is the next training session and the next game.

“So, the better the player can block it the better you will be as a team. But it is certainly unsettling depending on how much noise there is around that player.”

Liverpool.com says: Gordon would be a great signing for Liverpool but a holding midfielder and possibly a defender are bigger priorities in the market. If sporting director Richard Hughes could bring in one new face, that would be a major boost.

Howe being honest about having to sell players, though, can only be a good sign. It speaks volumes that even at this point in thee window, he doesn’t feel comfortable ruling out high-profile exits. Newcastle will need to free up PSR room again in the future so whether it happens this week or not, the chances of Gordon ending up at Liverpool at some point seem pretty good.
