Premier League make huge referee decision after Liverpool vs Chelsea VAR drama

John Brooks was the man in the middle as Liverpool came from behind to beat Chelsea 2-1 in the Premier League on Sunday with the referee at the centre of the action

John Brooks will referee again this weekend after taking charge of Chelsea’s defeat to Liverpool

Premier League referee John Brooks has been assigned another Merseyside match following his central role in a VAR-heavy 2-1 victory for Liverpool over Chelsea on Sunday. The official, who is now set to oversee Everton’s home game against Fulham, was at the heart of several key decisions at Anfield.

Notably, Brooks chose not to send off Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo early in the match –ย a decision that drew comparisons to Wiliam Saliba’s red card for Arsenal just a day earlier.ย He also reversed a penalty awarded to Arne Slot’s side.

However,ย with the support of VAR, Brooks did award the Reds a penalty for Levi Colwill’s foul on Curtis Jones.ย Now, he’s been tasked with managing Sean Dyche’s Toffees as they host Fulham at 5:30pm on Saturday.

Brooks and the VAR team, including Michael Oliver and assistant Nicholas Hopton, were largely deemed to have made the right calls during the Chelsea match. Blues fans, however,ย were left frustrated when Jadon Sancho didn’t win a penalty after Trent Alexander-Arnold stepped on his foot inside the box before Mohamed Salah’s opening goal.

Liverpool were also denied a penalty when Salah fell under pressure from Colwill. Gary Neville, providing co-commentary, suggested that Salah should have been booked for what he considered a dive, reportsย the Liverpool Echo.

Jamie Carragher, on the other hand, felt that Brooks and VAR were wrong to disallow the second penalty after Jones was brought down by Robert Sanchez. Liverpool still managed to secure a victory despite a scare from Nicolas Jackson’s equaliser just after the break, which was initially ruled out for offside but later allowed following a VAR check at Stockley Park. Curtis Jones quickly restored Liverpool’s lead.
